v4 uses crypto.randomUUID() — cryptographically secure, the safest choice for most use cases.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find out which version a UUID is?

Paste it into the Inspect tab. It validates the UUID and shows its version, variant and field breakdown, plus the timestamp, clock sequence and node for v1 and v6 UUIDs. A bulk validator checks a whole list at once.

What is the difference between UUID v4 and v7?

v4 is fully random. v7 embeds a Unix millisecond timestamp so IDs sort by creation time, which is friendlier for database indexes. Both can be generated here.

Can I generate a name-based UUID from a namespace and name?

Yes. The v3 (MD5) and v5 (SHA-1) tabs generate UUIDs from a namespace (DNS, URL, OID, X.500 or custom) and a name, and the result is always the same for the same inputs.

Which other ID formats are supported?

ULID, NanoID, KSUID, CUID2 (CUID2-style format), MongoDB ObjectID, Snowflake IDs, Sqids and TypeID, plus UUID v1, v6 and v7. Generated Snowflake and ObjectID values show their timestamp parts, and TypeID and Sqids can be decoded.

Is my data uploaded to a server?

No. This tool runs entirely in your browser — your input is processed locally on your device and is never uploaded or stored on a server.
