NFC Tag Reader

NFC Tag Reader

Scan NFC tags with the Web NFC API and inspect their raw records — serial number, record type, and decoded text/URL/MIME/binary data.

Web NFC requires Chrome for Android (v89+) served over HTTPS, with NFC enabled on the device. Hold the tag to the back of the phone while scanning or writing is active. Writing overwrites the tag's existing NDEF content.

Good to know

  • Only Chrome for Android supports Web NFC — there's no iOS Safari, desktop browser, or Firefox/Samsung Internet equivalent.
  • An app's embedded WebView does not support Web NFC either, only the standalone Chrome app — a wrapper app needs its own native NFC bridge to relay tag data into the page.
  • The tag itself must be NDEF-formatted. Tags that only expose IsoDep/NfcA (common for access cards and Mifare Classic) have no NDEF data — the phone will detect them, but reading will fail.

Frequently asked questions

How do I read an NFC tag with my phone?

Open the NFC Tag Reader in a supported browser and start a scan, then hold the tag to the phone. It shows the serial number and record types with decoded text, URL, MIME or binary data.

Why does the NFC reader say it is not supported?

Web NFC is only available in some browsers, mainly Chrome on Android, and requires a secure context. Desktop browsers and iOS do not support it.

What NFC data can I inspect?

The raw NDEF records on the tag, including type and decoded payload.

Can I write data to an NFC tag?

Yes, in a supported browser you can write a text, URL or custom MIME record to a tag.

Is my data uploaded to a server?

No. This tool runs entirely in your browser — your input is processed locally on your device and is never uploaded or stored on a server.
